Brian Kinwald (October 6, 1973 – April 3, 2019) was a pioneering figure in the world of radio-controlled (RC) car racing. Revered for his incredible driving talent, technical innovation, and vibrant personality, Kinwald helped shape the modern era of competitive RC racing and inspired generations of racers around the world.
Born in Huntington Beach, California, Kinwald began his racing journey in BMX before transitioning to RC racing in his teens. By age 15, he had caught the attention of industry leaders and joined Team Associated, traveling nationally to compete in premier events like the Reedy Race of Champions and ROAR Nationals.
His dominance on dirt tracks earned him the nickname “The Dirtinator.”
Kinwald wasn’t just fast—he was a technical genius. His meticulous attention to tire selection, chassis tuning, and track prep helped evolve the sport. He was a hands-on mentor, always willing to help younger drivers, share setup tips, and offer encouragement.
To honor his legacy, the Kinwald Klassic was established at Hobby Action RC Raceway in Chandler, Arizona, one of the premier indoor off-road tracks in the U.S. Held annually, this event brings together top drivers from across the country to celebrate Kinwald’s contributions and passion for RC racing.
